Montana Trip

Bear with me, blogging about my travels is new to me!

I had always wanted to visit Montana for as long as I could remember, and I finally got the chance in 2023.

We started the long drive (15 hours one way!) around 2 am. I couldn’t sleep due to the excitement of the trip and my husband was working night shifts at the time and was awake anyways. Most of the trip was dark until we were almost to Idaho. Luckily, all of that we had traveled before, so we didn’t miss much.

Once we got into Montana, around 3pm, I was so excited that the tiredness from driving 12+ hours hadn’t quite hit me. We decided to take the back side around Flathead Lake and didn’t realize it had a ton of road construction going on, that’s when the tiredness decided to really hit us. But we kept going and ended up stopping at a cute gas station with a meadow behind it, and there were even a few deer just hanging out in the meadow.

About an hour later we finally got to our hotel in Kalispell and to say we were exhausted would have been the understatement of the year. I don’t even remember what we did for dinner, I want to say we ordered pizza.

The following day we had plans to go to Glacier National Park, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to get a reservation to get in that morning. Which after driving over an hour- after driving 15+ hours the previous day- was disheartening. I don’t think National Parks should even have reservations, but that’s my personal opinion. We decided to just spend the day at Flathead Lake instead. We didn’t get to see much of the lake on our drive in as it was getting dark, but when we pulled up to the lake, I couldn’t believe how incredibly clear it was! My husband had been to the lake before and had told me how clear it was but seeing it for the first time was really amazing and awe inspiring.

The water was chilly but definitely not cold enough to not enjoy, but I’m also someone that the colder the water, the better. We swam and just took in the scenery of the area until early afternoon. We went to dinner at the Mexican restaurant near our hotel and had the most amazing Huckleberry Mojitos. Mojitos are by far my favorite drink already and the Huckleberry really took it to the next level, and it was also very dark purple.

The next day we explored Woodland Park in Kalispell and it is a super well maintained and a really neat park. We also ate some great food at a few different diners. I’m also realizing I should take better notes on our travels. We drove around a few different areas my husband had been to and just spent the day soaking in the last of Montana.

The following day it was time for us to come home and we really weren’t looking forward to the drive again and debating on breaking it up into 2 days but decided to see how we felt around the half way point, which was near Twin Falls, Idaho. But ultimately once we got to Twin Falls we just wanted to be home and sleep in our own bed, so we made the drive all the way home. We actually got back at a decent time, around 10pm, but after all of that traveling it felt like 1am!

The Montana trip was such a long drive but it was so worth it. I am so happy that we made the trip and I can’t wait to go back and explore even more!
