Wreck Rooms

Did you say 'Rec' Room? No, I said 'Wreck' Room.

Fruits and vegetables in glassware.

Have you ever looked at a nice piece of glass and thought "I can break that." But like a responsible adult you don't let those dark thoughts win. Although just the thought of chucking the glass across the room or even bringing a bat to a TV seems so satisfying, right? Then you should go to a wreck room.

A new way to relax

I'm not good at meditating, I'm not into incense or crystals, but the cathartic release of just absolutely smashing things? Heck yes. I recently got to experience a 'Rage room' for the first time and I know I will be going back to do it again. And if this is the first time you're hearing about a Rage/Wreck Room, then I will happily explain in great detail what it is.

You go into a room and smash things. That's it.

But seriously, I'm sure my experience is slightly different than others since every Wreck Room is slightly different. The one I went to was called Crunch Time located in Medford, OR, and I went with a group of friends. The owner was very nice and personable and had a joke or comeback for every comment or remark. He made the experience that much better. (Also if you need to get rid of old dishes, glasses, electronics, or other breakable sorts, he is always looking for donations, haha!)

Raging in a controlled environment: The Wreck Room

Safety was key, obviously, for a business owner. We signed the necessary waivers, and he got us all geared up. He had jumpsuits of every size, boots, gloves, masks, chest plates, and helmets. Everything you would need to protect yourself from flying shards of glass, plastic, and ceramic. He gave us the rundown of the rules, e.g. no running, swinging at each other, throwing at each other, which to me was common sense but we know how rare that is nowadays.

The package we purchased (which came to around $32 per adult that was there) had a good number of breakables placed in crates for us to grab from. On the back wall was an impressive array of weapons to use for breaking, like baseball bats, crowbars, wrenches, and others of the sort. There were two of those 50lbs oil barrels in the middle of the room for use to use as a stand to hit things on or off of, and there were two in the corners for us to throw the more shatter-able glasses at (which was incredibly satisfying to me.)

After giving us the rundown he notified us that there will be music playing, and generally he plays rock or hard rock because what else would you rage to? He offered if there was any other genre or group we wanted to listen to he would oblige, and my sarcastic self thought to myself 'Celine Dion' because who doesn't want to rage to the Titanic theme song?

The aftermath of our raging!

All jokes aside, it was a great time. We had an hour inside the room itself to break all of the smashables and were also given an option to add more things to break if we wanted, for a price of course. It was fairly inexpensive and a really great way to release all of the pent-up emotion you may have inside. Even if you don't have any pent-up emotions, it still felt cathartic to me. You may not be near the one I went to, but I know these places are popping up everywhere, so look for one in your area, I highly recommend it!
